London _ Southwark _ Anglais
Bar Douro
CityHood's Review
Concept
Light colours, high ceilings and traditional blue and white tiles bedecking the walls: Bar Douro brings together the vibe of a rustic Portugese restaurant into one of Southwark’s iconic archways. Serving up honest and inspired tapas, complemented by a well-researched list of wines from small suppliers, Bar Douro is seizing the Portugese-flavoured zeitgeist that’s simmering in London.
Food & Drinks
A menu designed for sharing and experimenting with flavour, the dishes here range from dainty crispy croquettes, up to an entire suckling pig. Each plate packs a carefully balanced punch, veering away from the cliche peri-peri chicken. Produce is all seasonal, locally-sourced, and Portugese, when possible. The wine list is heavy on ports and wines from more obscure regions, and the desserts list is a rich offering worth saving space for.
We Love
The mezzanine floor that offers a semi-private dining room for up to 12 people, for special occasions that require an upgrade from a barstool
Price
Snacks from £3, small plates from £4 and wines by the glass from £4.50
Tips
– While waiting for a table, enjoy the Flat Iron Square – a new London destination – and have a drink there
